The First Line

The first mark (line, dot, tone, smudge) that is put on a surface is actually the fifth.


























This is true because the first four "marks" of a picture are actually the boundaries of the surface (the edges of the paper or canvas or etching plate or whatever).


These first four "marks" define an area within which other marks can dance. 


You are actually "breaking the space" that they have created.
